Detailed Description
Everyone hopes that going to university life is going to be fun, interesting and fulfilling - but not everyone finds it that easy to make the leap from home to a more independent lifestyle.
Meeting people and learning to cope with new ways of studying can be hard work. Whether the problems are social or work-based, they can impact upon all experiences and ultimately the quality of university education.
Do it Yourself was made to support all new students by showing that their problems are shared by others and that there are solutions. The programme presents a collection of informal interviews with students on a range of key issues - including managing a social life, getting work done, looking for accommodation, budgeting, cooking, and outside interests. The students talk about various of these issues based on their experience and tell how they made sense of it all.
Designed for group discussion, this programme can also be usefully viewed by individuals. And, although it was produced with new students in mind, it should also be viewed by students more settled into university life, and the lecturers charged with their care. 1997, 18 mins,
