Detailed Description

This series shows the relevance of statistics to the science subjects and teaches the basic statistical methods required.

'Real life' situations are used to illustrate the relevance of statistics in a variety of disciplines, while animated graphics help explain the theoretical principles and processes involved. Exercise pauses are provided for students at regular intervals. The underlying theme of these modules is that variability is a fact of scientific life and that statistics enables you to handle this variability and draw suitable inferences from it.

Module 1: Handling variability covers systematic and random errors, and bias and random variation. (22 mins)

Module 2: Describing data covers qualitative and quantitative data, dot plots, bar charts and histograms, summary measures and characteristic values (mode, median and mean), the spread of a distribution (quartiles, inter-quartile range and standard deviation), and an introduction to normal distribution. (24 mins)

Module 3: Using samples covers random samples, standard error of the mean, and the 95% confidence interval. (19 mins)

Module 4: Bivariate data - when y depends on xcovers scatter diagrams, line of best fit, correlation coefficient, and curve of best fit. (14 mins)

Ideal viewing for A-level science students and anyone wanting to master statistics with an applied viewpoint. Programmes available separately.

Please note this series cannot be ordered from the USA and Canada for licensing reasons - USA/Canada customers should visit Films Media Group to order.
