Detailed Description

Early literacy with parents is a video for teachers and other early childhood educators who wish to develop their work with parents to promote early literacy.

It is designed for use on professional development and initial training courses, as well as in school- or centre-based development work.

It shows how children can learn about literacy from their families, and how schools and nursery centres can work with parents to promote children’s early literacy development. Work on different strands of literacy – environmental print, books, early writing and key aspects of oral language – are illustrated. Central to the programme are the four vital aspects of the parents’ role: Opportunities, Recognition, Interaction and providing a Model. The ORIM framework for planning work with parents is presented and explained. Filmed in home, neighbourhood, school and library settings, Early literacy education with parents links current research with good practice in order to demonstrate effective ways of promoting literacy through work with families.

A video from the REAL Project/Sheffield University Television A joint University of Sheffield and Sheffield Education Authority initiative 1996, 24 mins.
