Modern Languages Teaching Centre
Welcome to the Modern Languages Teaching Centre
Our Department forms part of the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics (SOMLAL). The Modern Languages Teaching Centre was established in 1993 to make the learning of a range of foreign languages available to all students in the University.
We run accredited language modules in French, German, Spanish, Italian, from beginners to near-native level of proficiency (stages 1-5), and are developing our provision in Arabic and Latin, which currently runs at two stages.
The undergraduate language modules can also be taken by staff, students and members of the public on a self-funding basis where space in the classes permits.
Our Undergraduate language provision is recognised both nationally and internationally for its quality and innovation, particularly in the areas of Tandem Learning, both face-to-face and at a distance. We receive consistently excellent reports from our External Examiners, and our courses have also been mapped onto the Council of Europe Frameworks for languages, thus allowing students with qualifications from Europe to fit with ease into our provision.
Where we are able, we also run Easter and June Intensive courses designed as ‘tasters’ for those interested in learning a new language or indeed brushing up on their old skills.
We train the City’s Primary School teachers and offer a range of other services.
The Centre is also the home for four highly successful Taught Masters’ courses: Intercultural Communication, Translation Studies, Screen Translation and Multilingual Information Management. For further information on these, please see our website (www.shef.ac.uk/mltc):
