"Sheffield Cares for the Wounded: A story of dedication and bravery" - Commemorative Book
Detailed Description
This book accompanies the exhibition hosted by the University of Sheffield Medical School between the 26th June and 28th November 2014.
The exhibition describes the work of the 3rd West Riding Field Ambulance which consisted of Sheffield doctors, nursing orderlies, nurses, stretcher bearers and chaplains on the Western Front in France during the Great War. Their heroic care of the wounded will be illustrated and how the Royal Army Medical Corps ( R.A.M.C.) efficiently organised the evacuation pathways from the front line back to England in the most horrific war the world has experienced. The care of the wounded returning to Sheffield by the territorial force of the 3rd Northern General Hospital in the city’s hospitals, halls, schools and even cricket pavilions where more than 70,000 wounded soldiers were treated throughout the war will also be described.
